On these pages is a two-bedroom apartment I designed in a building on New York’s Upper West Side that was a hotel in the 1970s. My goal was to create a space that didn’t necessarily feel like home so much as a sanctuary that transported my client out of her busy life to a place of luxury and respite. I wanted to bring into the design some of the romance and extravagance of a grand hotel but on a more casual scale that was in sync with the architecture and proportions of the space. Elegant hotels never leave any space—no matter how little or seemingly unimportant—undecorated. Whether it’s a hallway, a powder room, or a seating area, it’s always done. Paying attention to the small details goes far toward making a place special. I wanted to do the same in this entryway, to create a strong, formal space to offset the femininity of the rest of the apartment.

Because imparting a feeling of comfort was so important in this apartment, I wanted everything touched, sat in, or stepped on to have a warm, cozy feel. In the living room, I used tactile fabrics throughout: a silk rug, a silk velvet couch, low bucket chairs upholstered in bouclé, and silk drapes with tiebacks. On one side of the room I added a high side table, topped with a pair of busts and an art deco lamp; on the other, a marble console with traditional library lamps and leopard figurines. Both are purely decorative areas that add a bit of charm to the room overall.
